Tissue paper is a thin soft delicate paper that comes in all different colors and patterns. It is typically used for wrapping presents or in the store when wrapping delicate items.
Paper production is mainly a two-step process in which a fibrous raw material is first converted into pulp, and then the pulp is converted into paper. The harvested wood is first processed so that the fibres are separated from the unusable fraction of the wood, the lignin.
Currently, the starting material for the production of cellulose pulp, from which paper is made, are various types of fibrous plant materials obtained, among others, from coniferous and deciduous trees, but also from other plants, e.g. from flax, bamboo or cotton.
Some of the most commonly used softwood trees for paper making include spruce, pine, fir, larch and hemlock, and hardwoods such as eucalyptus, aspen and birch.
The chemicals used are (1) sulfite salts with an excess of sulfur dioxide and (2) caustic soda and sodium sulfide (the kraft process). The lignin of the wood is made soluble, and the fibres separate as whole fibres. Further purification can be accomplished by bleaching.
What does GSM paper mean? Paper is measured in grams per square metre (GSM). The higher the GSM, the heavier and thicker the paper. There are varying weights of GSM paper, meaning you can find the right one for a number of different applications.
It also determines the type of paper. Thus rag paper, half-rag paper, wood-free paper and wood-containing papers are distinguished. Rag paper contains 100% linen and/or cotton fibre and is therefore the highest quality and most expensive paper.
A4 paper is the most commonly-used for printing and measures 210mm x 297mm. This paper comes in many different weights and with several different coatings, meaning there is an A4 paper that is suitable for any printing job.
Card stock, also called cover stock and pasteboard, is paper that is thicker and more durable than normal writing and printing paper, but thinner and more flexible than other forms of paperboard.
The word paper is etymologically derived from Latin papyrus, which comes from the Greek πᾰ́πῡρος (pápūros), the word for the Cyperus papyrus plant.
