Sherin Mansoor is probably a name that rings no bell in Oman when it comes to the fashion industry. However, this Muscat resident is becoming a trending name internationally as she debuted her collection at Cannes 2015 held last month.
The high profile Festival de Cannes witnesses a media blitzkrieg every year as the who's who of world cinema, entertainment industry and fashion industry make an appearance at the French Riviera. At the event where the clothes worn by a celebrity or a model is scrutinised by the fashion police and is of utmost importance to the international media, Sherin's designs received much appreciation. French producer and socialite Jessica Clavitte wore a signature couture dress created by Sherin at the Cannes red carpet – a black Chantilly lace (French lace) design with gold embroidery work.
“I feel like I am floating on a cloud,” said an excited Sherin from her home in Qurm about her unanticipated journey to fame. Everything seems to be on a fast track motion now, feels Sherin who has just received an invitation from Tiffany's Fashion Week Paris.
Like most Cannes-first-timers who are dazed by the overwhelming crowd of celebrities, Sherin felt robbed of this experience. She confesses that she was unaware of their celebrity status as she has never really followed Hollywood news. “The entire place (Cannes) was flooded with celebrities, actors, models and socialites, but I didn't know them,” said Sherin who had no time for a breather at the festival. “I couldn't even sit back and enjoy my own show.”
Sherin's designs are reflective of the diverse cultures that have inspired her. An Indian who has lived in Oman most of her life, the 40 year old fashion designer creates ensembles that capture the charm of both worlds through the fabrics they have.

Her designs, easily passable as haute couture pieces from high-end fashion houses, have an intricate mix of Indian fabric, sequins and western cuts.“I tend to be deeply inspired by fabric and often merge western wear with Indian colours, lace, raw silk and other rich traditional handiworks like brocade and embroidery,” says Sherin about her method of creating dresses. “My collections strive to merge the elegance and richness of Indian royalty with western designs.”
She feels her status as a trending designer is now gaining momentum having showcased her creations at high fashion runways such as The London Fashion Week and pre-Oscar parties at Hollywood, Los Angeles.
“I have been designing clothes forever, but things started falling into place in the past three years.”
Without any formal training in fashion designing, for Sherin, making clothes and experimenting with fabrics was just a hobby. Social networking sites like Facebook, helped her gain the desired audience who recommended her to fashion agents across the world. A twist of fate during a photo shoot in Hollywood, got her introduced to Gene Cheng, a Hollywood PR agent who arranged her Cannes entry.
Today, Sherin's collection is displayed in boutiques across the UK, in Hollywood and the famed Melrose Avenue. Talking about her future endeavours, Sherin, who only wrapped up her Cannes obligations last month, quickly slips in that she desperately needs a vacation. “I am too tired, everything is happening so soon,” she says, hinting at a possible runway outing at the Paris Fashion Week from September to October.
